As well as appropriate work experience and attitude, many jobs and roles in hotels require specific qualifications to be obtained before or shortly after employment commences.  The following guide applies to the types of qualifications required to work in Queensland hotels. Note that most of the qualification courses required to work in hotels are available through the Queensland Hotels Association, which is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) – see the Training section of this website for further details.
  • Responsible Management of Licensed Venue Course (RMLV) – is a two day mandatory course for applicants for new licenses or transfers of license; or a change of nominee, and if they have not held a license before, or they have not been a licensee or nominee in the last three years.  The Liquor Licensing Division encourages anyone in a supervisory or management position, who aspires to be a nominee or licensee to undertake the course.

Gaming Nominee Course – is a two day mandatory course for existing and new gaming nominees.  All gaming nominees at hotels with Electronic Gaming Machines must have this qualification.

  • Responsible Service of Alcohol Course (RSA) – is a half day course which promotes responsible service and consumption of alcohol in venues.  RSA qualification is mandatory for hotel retail and security staff in some circumstances in Queensland, and the hotel industry trend is for all staff to be RSA qualified.

  • Responsible Service of Gaming (RSG) – is a half day recommended course (not mandatory) which promotes responsible gambling practice and service in venues.  This course is suitable and recommended for all full-time gaming staff in hotels.

  • Security Provider’s License  – all security and crowd controllers who work in the hotel industry must have a current Security Provider’s License.  To be eligible to apply for a licence, applicants must have completed a Certificate II in Security Operations Course through a Registered Training Organisation.  Further details are available at the Queensland Office of Fair Trading website at www.fairtrading.qld.gov.au

  • Recognised Trade Qualifications – generally, job applicants must have a qualification which conforms to the Australian Quality Training Framework (AQTF) before applying for skilled jobs such as chef, sous-chef, accountant etc.  As a general rule, all Australian institution qualifications will be recognised in the Queensland hotel industry, and qualifications obtained overseas will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
